A select few off-the-beaten-path areas in the Albertine Rift montane forests, which thrive across the borders of six East African countries, are home to gorilla trekking. The mountain gorillas live in the wet, gloomy forests of Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park, Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, Tanzania’s Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, and the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo’s Virunga National Park.
Trekking with gorillas in Rwanda is a singular and profound experience, as Volcanoes National Park is home to both mountain gorillas and chimpanzees, giving you the chance to see two of the Great Apes in one visit. Trekking to discover one of the ten gorilla groups is appealing to a larger age and fitness range because of the landscape, which is slightly simpler to maneuver than in Uganda. One of Rwanda’s primary draws is still the mountain gorillas. Despite being a threatened species, the gentle giants’ numbers are steadily increasing as a result of local conservation initiatives. Make sure to reserve your visit well in advance to avoid disappointment, as only 80 permits are granted each day.
Within the Virunga transboundary in Uganda, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park lies on the edge of the Rift Valley and is home to over half of the remaining mountain gorilla population. This strenuous journey, which can take anywhere from three to nine hours, is a gorilla trekking destination best suited for the fit and daring. It includes steep slopes. But the effort is worthwhile since the breathtaking Bwindi valleys provide the ideal setting for your gorilla encounter. Other monkey species, a wide range of birds, and potentially even unusual mammals like buffalo, enormous forest hogs, and the uncommon forest elephant on foot could all be seen along the route! It is imperative to make reservations in advance, particularly for visits during the peak summer months of June through August, as only 88 permits are granted daily.
When to visit
While it is possible to trek mountain gorillas throughout the year, most visitors choose to visit during the dry seasons, which run from June to September, and from December to February because of the relatively wet seasons in national parks.
