The surviving wildebeest, zebra and antelope start to head towards the northern Serengeti, the Grumeti River crossing in their wake, and spread out towards the Ikorongo Game Controlled Area, with some moving further east towards Lobo. The allure of the fresh grasslands in Kenya’s Masai Mara motivate their movements, even knowing the worst is yet to come: the great Mara River.
The Mara River does not necessarily signify entry into Kenya. The large river winds through the north-western Serengeti before meandering into the western Masai Mara. There are a number of water obstacles thrown at the herd on either side of the river throughout July and August, which makes for good viewing in either country.
The original Maasai tribe once led a nomadic lifestyle, following their herds to lush, bountiful pastures spread over the Serengeti and Masai Mara, much like the animals of the great migration. They are now semi-nomadic and have established huts and bomas in the communities where they have converted to pastoralists, with cattle serving as a status symbol and an integral part of their way of life. They continue to practice their ancestral way of life, which includes traditional ceremonies, cultural dances, colorful dress, and magnificent hand-crafted beadwork, despite this modern transformation.
